Home Energy Tax Credits in 2026: What Changed

For a new 2026 project, do not subtract federal 25C or 25D credits from your budget. Both credits ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Filing a return in 2026 for qualifying work completed in 2025 is a different situation.

Match the installation year to the return

SituationPlanning treatment
New heat pump, insulation, windows or energy audit in 2026No federal 25C credit.
New homeowner solar or battery installation in 2026No federal 25D credit.
Eligible work completed in 2025Check the 2025 credit rules and Form 5695 instructions for that tax year.
Unused eligible 25D credit from an earlier yearA carryforward may apply; it does not make new 2026 spending eligible.

Build a budget you can act on

  1. Get a written installed price, including permits, electrical work and disposal.
  2. List each state, utility or manufacturer incentive separately. Confirm availability, eligibility, deadlines and payment timing with the program.
  3. Subtract only incentives you have verified. Keep financing separate: a loan changes payment timing, not project cost.
  4. Compare energy costs using your own bills and the proposed equipment. Include financing and maintenance when comparing options.

Example: a $12,000 quote with a confirmed $1,000 utility rebate leaves $11,000 before financing costs. With no confirmed rebate, budget $12,000. This is an illustration, not a market quote or an eligibility determination.

Keep the supporting records

Save invoices, installation dates, equipment details, program approvals and rebate receipts together. For prior-year claims, use the instructions for that tax year rather than an older article promising credits through 2032.
