Home Inventory Checklist: A Room-by-Room Starter Plan

Updated

Start in the room you know best. Take a slow video, then make individual entries for the belongings that would be hardest to identify or replace. A useful entry pairs a photo with a model number, approximate purchase date and any receipt you can find. You can finish the rest of the rooms in later sessions.

Most people cannot list what is in their own kitchen from memory, let alone the garage. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners encourages homeowners to keep an inventory of their belongings as part of understanding and using their coverage ( NAIC ). An inventory does not guarantee any claim result, and how a policy values items depends on that policy. What it does is replace a stressful memory exercise with a record you made calmly. It also helps you think about whether your coverage limits roughly match what you own, which is a conversation to have with your insurer or agent.

Keep two lists separate, because they serve different purposes.
