HVAC age lookup from your records
Use a confirmed year from an installer invoice, equipment record or manufacturer response to calculate a calendar-year difference. This free tool is for homeowners organizing an air conditioner, heat pump, furnace or air-handler record. It keeps manufacture and installation dates separate, leaves missing dates unknown and makes no serial-number guesses. Age is a starting point for a record, not a prediction of remaining life or a warranty decision.

Calculate from a confirmed record
The interactive calculator needs JavaScript. Without it, subtract the documented year from the current UTC calendar year. That is a calendar-year difference, not an exact elapsed age.
Choose manufacture or installation and use a documented four-digit year. Leave it unknown if you have no evidence. No signup is needed for this calculation.
Method and source boundary
Calculation: current UTC calendar year minus your documented year. Because month and day are not supplied, the result is not an exact elapsed age. The source is your record, not a manufacturer lookup database. The tool accepts four-digit years from 1900 through the current UTC year; 1900 is a technical input boundary, not a claim about equipment lifespan. Blank dates stay unknown. Near New Year, the UTC year can differ from your local year.
Subtract the documented year from the current UTC calendar year (or the reference year shown in the result when the calculator runs). That arithmetic says nothing about warranty eligibility or how long the unit will last.
If the date is missing
Photograph an accessible equipment label without opening covers or altering the unit. Keep model and serial fields distinct. Ask the manufacturer or installer to confirm an unclear date. Do not substitute the house construction year without evidence for this particular unit.
Keep each unit separate
An outdoor condenser or heat pump, indoor air handler and furnace may have different dates. Calculate and save each supporting record separately. This page does not save, transmit or automatically add your inputs to an account.
Age is one planning input
Use the home system age guide to organize records and the 2026 lifespan chart for labeled category references. A chart does not determine your unit’s condition or warranty. Follow manufacturer service instructions and seek a qualified assessment of active symptoms.
For water-heater records, the separate water heater age lookup explains its supported manufacturer format and limits. The maintenance guide helps organize the next task.
HVAC age questions
Can this tool decode my HVAC serial number?
No. It uses only a manufacture or installation year that you have confirmed. Ask the manufacturer or installer about an unclear label; do not turn an unverified code into a date.
Is manufacture year the same as installation year?
No. Equipment can be installed after it was manufactured. Label the date as manufacture or installation according to what your record actually establishes and keep the supporting source.
What if my indoor and outdoor units have different years?
Keep separate records for each unit. An outdoor condenser or heat pump, indoor air handler and furnace can have different manufacture and installation dates.
Does an old unit need replacement?
Age alone does not establish condition or remaining life. Use maintenance records and a qualified assessment of symptoms when planning work. Follow the manufacturer’s service instructions.
Does this page save or send my year?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. The home-record link opens HomeScore separately and does not transfer the year or result into an account.
