Water heater age lookup

Find a starting point for your water-heater record using the serial number on its label. This free tool reads one documented Rheem format and estimates time since manufacture. It does not establish the installation date, remaining life, condition or warranty coverage. For Bradford White and A.O. Smith, follow the manufacturer resources below. Keep the label photo and installation receipt together so an age estimate can become a confirmed home record.

Check a Rheem serial number

The interactive lookup needs JavaScript. You can still use the manual example and manufacturer resources below. Supported format: 1209D01234. No signup is needed.

Use the label's manufacture date to start a record; it does not establish remaining life or warranty coverage.

Read the date, then confirm the record

Rheem's published example is 1209D01234: December 2009, followed by a plant code and sequence. This tool deliberately supports that format only. It does not guess at prefixes, missing characters or a different manufacturer's numbering system.

  1. Photograph the label without opening or altering the appliance.
  2. Check the manufacturer and copy the full serial number.
  3. Compare the result with the installation receipt or other dated records.
  4. Keep manufacture and installation dates in separate fields; mark uncertain dates as estimates.

Method: subtract the encoded month and year from the current UTC month and year. The approximate age is rounded to calendar months because the label format does not establish a day. Read Rheem's serial-number guide.

Bradford White and A.O. Smith

Use Bradford White's manufacturer date-code chart or A.O. Smith's official serial-number and warranty resource. This page does not decode either brand. If an official resource does not resolve the date, contact that manufacturer with the model and serial number; do not substitute the Rheem pattern.

Age is different from expected lifespan

Two numbers with different meanings
ReferenceNumberHow to use it
Rheem's tank-water-heater guidance8–12 yearsTypical tank-heater lifespan guidance from the manufacturer, not a deadline for your unit.
HomeScore's compiled water-heater database16 yearsA rounded category benchmark derived from rated-specification midpoints, mixing tank and tankless entries. Treat it as a rated-spec ceiling for planning, not an observed average, tank-only expectation or remaining-life promise.

The figures are not interchangeable. Rheem's repair-or-replace guide describes the first. HomeScore's lifespan database supplies the second. Neither replaces an assessment of the actual heater.

Turn a date into a useful next step

Save the model, label photo, confirmed dates, service receipts and any symptoms in one place. If a professional inspects the heater, add the diagnosis and quote alongside those records. That gives your next decision more context than an age alone.

For planned replacement, compare equipment type and installation scope before comparing prices. Use the water-heater replacement cost guide to prepare questions, then get a property-specific quote. The repair-versus-replace planner and lifespan checker offer further planning context.

Water heater age questions

Where do I find the serial number?

Look for the exterior rating label and distinguish the serial number from the model number. Use the manufacturer guide if the label is unclear; do not remove covers or disconnect anything to use this tool.

Which Rheem serial numbers work here?

Only the documented format with four digits, one plant letter and five digits is decoded. The first pair gives the month and the next pair the year. Other formats need manufacturer confirmation.

Does the result tell me when the heater was installed?

No. Manufacture and installation are separate dates. An invoice, permit or installer record can establish installation; keep that evidence with the label photo.

Why do I need to choose a century?

A two-digit year does not identify a century. Choose using your records. The tool rejects future dates and does not silently convert them into older dates.

Does an older heater automatically need replacement?

No. Age is one planning input. Condition, maintenance history, symptoms and a professional assessment matter. A database number is not a safe-use limit or a prediction for your unit.

Do you save or send my serial number?

This lookup calculates in your browser. It does not submit or store the serial number, and the result is not automatically added to a HomeScore account.
